Poutine – WSJ

A few months ago, I got a dream assignment from the Wall Street Journal. What would this assignment be you ask? Traveling to the Andes to photograph the gorgeous mountains? No. Taking a portrait of Bill Murray, one of your all time favorite actors? Nope. Photographing the Montreal Canadiens roster? Nope again. No, it was to photograph our provinces’ most cherished and sometimes ridiculed junk food dish. Poutine.

I traveled over 600kms to photograph our national dish in the province of Quebec. I ate a lot of poutine and loved it. My stomach didn’t feel the same way though…

Lac Megantic – One year later

I will remember where I was when I heard the tragic news of the Lac Megantic train disaster. One year ago tomorrow, I was in the hospital with my wife and premature twins when I heard of the sad news.

Detraform – L7

Here’s a recent shoot I did for my good friends over at Detraform. I’ve shot photos for this telephone in the past (http://willlew.com/index.php?/things/detraform/) but that was for their non functioning prototype. This time around you it was a real working model.

Ice wine

It’s been a while, i know and i’m following up with a shoot from a while back as well. All the way back to last November. We’re in a heat wave so what better way to cool off than to think of winter and ice wine!

Charlevoix – Maclean’s Magazine

Last fall I had the chance to shoot for a great series for Maclean’s Magazine. It’s finally out on news stands now and it’s called “Canada 2014: 10 Places You’ve Got to See”.
I was assigned Charlevoix, Quebec.

: These waterfalls are from the Malbaie river closer to town. It’s part of a family run campground. I came back the next morning and the falls were covered in ice.

: Isabelle Mihura is originally from France but fell in love not only a Quebecer but also the Charlevoix region. She owns a farm in St. Urbain in the interior of the Charlevoix. It has it’s own micro climate as it’s surrounded by hills and mountains.

: David Forbes of Les Labours restaurant in Baie St. Paul, stands over his dishes made from locally grown produce.

: Sunset in the Charlevoix region is gorgeous. The road along the river is probably the prettiest part of Quebec I’ve ever been to. This is in Port au Persil at dusk.

: I got to Baie des Rochers just in time for sunset. I literally jumped out of my car and ran to this spot just before the sun set.

: This perfect view of La Malbaie is in a cemetery and on top a hill. I’m usually not afraid of the dark but sitting in a cemetery, alone at night and in 5 degree weather, does make you look over your shoulder once or twice.

Mordecai Richler for Maclean’s Magazine

Touchfit – George St-Pierre iPhone workout app

I had the pleasure to meet and photograph the local + international star, George St-Pierre of UFC fame, for his workout app called Touchfit. You can see and download the app here: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/touchfit-gsp-500+-exercise/id612292961?mt=8

We managed to photograph and film over 500 exercises in 2 days. Pretty incredible even for someone like GSP.

Wall Street Journal – Montreal Churches

Oh boy. It’s been a long 4 months of nothing from me here but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. Far from it. Babies and work have forced me to become a bit of a narcoleptic but it’s not that bad anymore, hence me writing here.

Here’s a story I shot of the St. Jude Spa & Gym for the Wall Street Journal about churches being converted to condos/schools/etc. It’s in today’s paper!

It’s a girl! … and another girl!

There are probably many moments in life where you step back and tell yourself that this is something you will remember for the rest of your life. Your first day at school. Your first time on a bike. Your first kiss. Your wedding day.

For me, the day that I found out my wife and I were going to have twins was one of those days.
Four weeks ago these twins were born. That day will truly be the most memorable day of my life. My wife was a champ and pushed these two out 10 mins apart and poof, just like that, we were a family of four.

This past year has been nothing short of milestones in my life. It’s funny to think that this time last year I was neither a husband nor a father (of two). I’m proud of both milestones and looking forward to the rough road of fatherhood!

To Alice and Simone, I love you both already so much.

CULT MTL – Best of 2013

After the Montreal Mirror was unexpectedly shut down last year, some of the writers and editors started up their own anglophone free paper called Cult MTL. I’ve stayed in touch and recently did a shoot for their “Best of Montreal” which basically follows the Mirrors format of best-of’s in town. Big props to these guys for rising from the ashes of the Mirror. Looking forward to shooting more for them in the future.
