Best bang for your buck

No. This isn’t a post about photo gear but about breakfast. The best bang for your buck breakfast in town has to be in my old ‘hood of St Henri in Montreal. John’s Restaurant has been around amazingly since 1919. Still come here from across town from time to time.

Applied Arts double win!

I got great news today! I will be in this year’s Applied Arts Photo/Illustration annual. I won twice in the same category of “photojournalism story”. This will be my 5th time winning.
You can see the complete list of winners on the Applied Arts website. Because it’s arranged alphabetically by first name, I’m last! Haha!:

The magazine will be out in the May/June issue of Applied Arts. Look out for it!

rePorter – Windsor

Porter’s inflight magazine, rePorter, sent me to Windsor for a couple of days to shoot their neighbourhood section for Issue 19. Windsor is tiny but there are some great places to eat and drink. One of the highlights for me was whiskey tasting (see below) at the Canadian Club museum. During the years of the prohibition, famous gangster, Al Capone smuggled thousands of cases from Windsor into Detroit.

Good thing the Canadian Club Museum was the last place to shoot that day. I don’t even think autofocus would have helped me! Yes. I’m a lightweight drinker.

Sean Nicolas Savage for the Mirror

Here’s a cover image for the Montreal Mirror that I shot last week. Sean Nicholas Savage is a local singer/songwriter originally from Alberta. I showed up to Sean’s apartment on a Monday morning and used some great natural light.
The photo of him with the blue background reminded me of a Vincent Van Gogh self portrait. Too bad they didn’t decide to run it. It was my favorite from the shoot.

Philippe Falardeau for the Montreal Mirror

Back in October I got a chance to meet and photograph Philippe Falardeau for the Mirror. On top of being a great director, he’s also a super nice and friendly guy! His new movie, Monsieur Lazhar, was one of Canada’s official Oscar submissions.

Porter

Porter airlines puts out a beautiful inflight magazine, designed by Winkreative in London (England). I’ve wanted to shoot for these guys for a really long time. Here’s a story I shot for them at the Pierre Elliot Trudeau airport in Montreal.

Stanely Cup ring

I know I’ve been neglecting this blog for a while. I’ve been quite busy since moving back to Montreal. Hurray! Work! After a less than encouraging year (work wise) abroad, it’s been quite overwhelming to think that people will still call you even after being away for so long. Gotta love ’em clients!

Here’s an out take from a shoot back in late August I did for Expressions Magazine (car magazine). I was assigned to photograph Stephan Lebeau. Who is Stephan Lebeau you ask? Well if you’re a hockey fan, or more precociously, a Montreal Canadiens fan, then you’ll know he was a big part of the 1993 Stanely Cup winning Canadiens. It was a thrill to meet him. I told him how much of a fan I was and he let me wear his ring! I think I immediately reverted back into that 13 year old boy when I put it on.

And here are a few shots of Stephan and the advertorial for the magazine below:

Provence

Rounding out our trip in Southern France, we headed to the Provence area near Avignon. Yup. Visited the bridge from where the popular French song originates. Again this area of France is filled with wine, cheese and bread. By the end so was I.
